A Message from Ms. Elmslie!
Dear Glencairn Community,
We apologize for the walkways outside of the school not being cleared earlier in the week. Our snow removal is contracted to a third party and is not maintained through the Waterloo Region District School Board. Please know that we have been in touch with the contractor to express our concerns with the delayed removal of snow. We are hopeful for better snow removal service moving forward.
A reminder, particularly to Extended Day families, that parking is available across the street for drop off and pick up of students. Please do not park in the Fire Route.
This week we enjoyed some visits from furry friends! On Tuesday and Thursday students enjoyed visiting ‘Scout’, a Lionhead Rabbit; and on Wednesday, students learned about and from the dog ‘ Stella’ who is part Husky. Thank you to Ms. Herlick for arranging the Humane Society visits; they are always ‘a hit’ with the students. The students learned the different ways the Humane Society supports animals and taught the students how to be responsible pet owners.
Today the students at Glencairn enjoyed another assembly related to our school motto: “We are a caring, respectful team that never gives up!” This month’s assembly focused on “Respect”.
Glencairn Public School is excited to launch our annual Fill the Nest Food Drive in support of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region! More than 72,500 people in the Waterloo Region rely on food support, and together we can help make a meaningful difference. This year, our Grey Jays are working toward a school-wide goal of 1,000 donated items to support families in our community.
This year we have different ways you can contribute:
1) Send in non-perishable food items on our item collection days (listed below)
2) Make an online monetary donation here:
https://foodbank.donorsupport.co/-/NHEBHEFN
Please note: Families are welcome to send in any non-perishable items, on any day, throughout the week.
Item Collection Days
- Monday: Individually wrapped snacks (granola bars, fruit cups, juice boxes, applesauce, pudding cups)
- Tuesday: Staples & canned goods (rice, pasta, pasta sauce, dried beans)
- Wednesday: Canned meat and fish, canned fruit and vegetables
- Thursday: Breakfast items & spreads (hot/cold cereals, jam, peanut butter)
- Friday: Your favourite non-perishable food item
Thank you for helping us Fill the Nest! Every donation, big or small, supports local families and teaches our students the importance of compassion, teamwork, and giving back.
The province of Ontario released EQAO scores this week. Happily, Glencairn’s EQAO results are different from overall provincial results and are very good. The following percentages indicate at or above provincial standards: Grade 3: Reading 77.1%, Writing 51.4 % Mathematics 67.6%. Grade 6: Reading 100%, Writing 92.6 % and Mathematics 63%. As a school we use this information to inform our professional learning and student foci all in service to improve student learning, understanding and achievement.
