A Message from  Ms. Elmslie!

This past Saturday the Glencairn Basketball team took part in the Laurier Ball-Star competition at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo. Our Glencairn Grey Jays made our school proud by being a caring, respectful team that never gives up! The team won 2 of their 3 round robin games, which lead them to fourth place overall after the first round! After the first round the coaches took to the court to battle against the Laurier basketball team. Congrats to Mr. Pittman for scoring a basket against the 6 foot tall superstars! What an exciting day. We are all so proud of the students for their hard work and dedication. This afternoon the basketball season will close with a staff versus student basketball game! Of course, none of this would have been possible without the dedication and care of Glencairn’s Madelle Cable, Mr. Pittman and Mr. Burrows who spent many hours practicing with the student team and afterschool basketball games with local schools.

Singing is a joyful noise! It was a sincere joy and pleasure to hear the Glencairn choir singing in unison with other Waterloo Region District School Board choirs at the Kodaly Festival on Tuesday night of this week at The Centre in the Square. The students’ hard work practicing at nutrition breaks and some early mornings certainly paid off! Thank you again to the Choir Directors, Ms. Williams and Ms. Lawry without whom this outstanding event would not have been possible.

Some of the learning I observed this week was EQAO preparation in Mr. Whitson’s grade 6 class; the students reviewed the various types of EQAO language questions and the computer tools available to them. I loved being part of a 4/5A book club meeting with students who are reading Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo. Students are learning complex skills as they discuss the characters in their book and potential reasons for their likes and dislikes.

Registration for 2026-2027 Before and After School Programs operated by the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) will open on May 19, 2026.

Starting in the 2026-27 school year, registrations will be assessed using a new priority criteria. If your child is currently enrolled in a Before and After School Program for the 2025–2026 school year (as of May 1, 2026) and you register between May 19 and May 29, 2026, your registration will be considered in the priority placement.

The Waterloo Region District School Board has also introduced several improvements to the registration process based on feedback from parents, families and caregivers, including a new online registration system; easier sibling registration; and enhanced communication about space availability.

More information about the registration process, eligibility, and what to expect is available on the Waterloo Region District School Board website: https://wrdsb.social/4naATKf
